Yellow Boxfish (juvenile)

Ostracion cubicus

Description:

This boxfish got its name from the bright yellow color it sports as a juvenile; upon reaching adulthood, it will change to a more somber bluish color. Also known as Cube Trunkfish, Polka-dot Boxfish and Black-spotted Boxfish. Juvenile boxfish feed primarily on algae, but will also eat sponges, mollusks and invertebrates.

Habitat:

Very secretive and shy, juvenile boxfish are found very close to narrow crevices. Widespread in the Indo-Pacific region.

Notes:

It's quite a challenge to take pictures of boxfish, because they're so elusive. I got lucky this time when this one ducked into what turned out to be a shallow crevice.
