Southern Redcedar

Juniperus silicicola

Description:

Medium size evergreen tree. Thin twigs are covered with scale-type leaves that are smooth to the touch; not prickly like the white cedar or eastern redcedar. The bark is reddish brown with a silver cast, very thin and can shred off in long stringlike strands. The fruit is 3/16 inch blue-gray soft berry.

Habitat:

Found growing in sand along Florida's eastern coastline.

Notes:

Southern redcedar was virtually eliminated as an overstory tree during the 19th century by harvesting, primarily for the manufacture of pencils.
