I stated I was a novice at turtles; but I think Kansas is out of the range for the eastern. Wikipedia said that the geographical range for Terrapene carolina bauri "It is endemic to the U.S. state of Florida and the extreme southeastern portion of Georgia." Here are range maps I found:

Looks like eastern box turtle to me. But could be a different subspecies
