Well, since the colours are very variable, I look at the scales above the eye. I noticed that in A.ramsayi this "eyebrow" is divided in two, whereas in A.superbus it is in one piece. As far as I can see on your photo, it is in one piece.. I'm not sure though if this is really scientific, that is why I made the suggestion in the comments, not as an official ID suggestion...

What features do you use to distinguish between the lowland and highland species?
Lowland (or common) copperhead: Austrelaps superbus.
