Uca pugilator
Fiddler crabs, I think. Tannish with a purple back.
ocean mud flats, low tide.
No problem, that's what we are here for, and a belated welcome to Project Noah on behalf of the Ranger team.
Indeed Fiddler Crabs, you (I) can see the large single claw on the males.
3 species are possible on that coast:
Atlantic Sand Fiddler Crab ______ MD NC (ASC:628)
Uca pugilator
Atlantic Marsh Fiddler Crab ______ MD
Uca pugnax
Brackish-water Fiddler Crab ______ MD NC (ASC:629) (another name is Red-jointed Fiddler Crab)
Uca minax
1st and 3rd are most likely but the 2nd has been reported there recently, though it used to only occur further south
I got the information from here http://www.focusonnature.com/NorthAmeric...
You should be able to search the 3 scientific names and compare with your 2nd picture to determine which exact species you have.
They are all Uca genus.
