Ichneumon Wasp

Therion sp.

Description:

A fairly strange figured wasp, which was about 1.5 inches in length, including the antennae. These have been flying around, low on the ground for the past few days. Any ID help would be greatly appreciated. Look at the stinger on this guy! Scary, huh?

Thanks Miguel. I had it at Ichneumon Wasp, but had no such luck, so when I saw spider hunter, it seemed to make sense. I'll look into it. Thanks again.

I'm pretty sure that is not a spider wasp. The spider wasps (pompilidae) include the Tarantula Hawk (Pepsis wasp) Pepsis elegans (Elegant Tarantula Hawk), Pepsis mexicana (Mexican Tarantula Hawk). Spider wasps are typically black (There are a few exceptions) with a bluish/purplish metallic sheen with either black wings or red wings - see the link here for examples:

The wasp pictured above looks more like a large Ichneumon Wasp known as Anomaloninae. See the link below for confirmation and more details:

Thanks, Sergio! That is MY type of wasp! I'm going to do some digging around some resources and see if I can get a specific ID.

That is one of those spider hunter wasps. It was probably looking for a spider on the ground.
