Dewberries

Rubus spp.

Description:

Growing very low to the ground, just about ON the ground, similar to ivy. Thorns are not always present, and sometimes as fine as little hairs. Berries taste like mild blackberries. They are delicious, and I hope not poisonous since I've been picking and eating them all afternoon.

Habitat:

Growing with highbush blueberries and large, very thorny blackberry bushes.

Dewberries are distinguished from other species of Rubus by the trailing canes, in contrast to the upright or arching canes of other species. Also the berry is usually shorter and more stout. The various species of Rubus readily hybridize, making determining exact species difficult even for an expert.
