Hi acbrickey, the fruits are called Sloe berries and they grow on the Blackthorn Tree. They are mostly used for preserves. There are common recipes for making Gin or Jam out of them. You wouldn't want to eat them raw as they are rather tart raw, and only taste nice picked after the first few days of autumn frost. Hope that helps!
