You would be correct. It has no stinger. I found the ID by accident when I was looking up a different fly. I was really excited when I found out what it was because I was thinking it was a wasp all along. Amazing mimicry!

Hey thanks. It sure does looks like a wasp with that abdomen and thin, long wings. So I assume it can't sting? Found it in my garage.

I know what this is! I just was able to identify my own photos of this little fellow (though not yet posted). This is a very cleverly disguised fly! It's a wasp mimic! It doesn't appear to specifically have a common name but some people have called it a Black Thick-headed Fly.
