Northern Watersnake

Nerodia sipedon sipedon

Description:

Northern watersnakes are often mistaken for venomous Cottonmouths. They are in fact harmless, although quite feisty.

Habitat:

wetlands, lakes, rivers, ponds, etc

Notes:

This large female watersnake was attempting to eat a large bullhead catfish. The catfish was nearly a foot long, so that will give you some idea of how big this snake is in comparison to the fish.

I've thought about this snake often since that day and wondered the same thing, if she was successful. All I know for sure is she had over half of the fish down when she dove under water and disappeared from sight. Another snake kept pestering her and she finally got tired of it and left.

I have a friend who has some Nerodia sipedon that live beside her dock. She has been had feeding them brim for the past 3 or 4 years now. She sent me video. They are very calm and deliberate and never bite her hand.
