Hippo

Hippopotamus amphibius

Description:

Despite their resemblance to pigs, the hippo's closest relative is the whale and other cetaceans. Hippos in Chobe have not been pursued by man(they are popular as bush meat) and do not show the signs of aggression we saw in nearby Namibia, where on more than one occasion we were threatened and had a hippo bump our boat.

Habitat:

Chobe park

Notes:

Behind the hippos is the Chobe river and Namibia. Our guides pointed outthat Chobe is well protected and patrolled(they have army personnel camps within the park at various locations and any footprints more than 10 feet from a vehicle are reported to the troops) and that all the animals we saw would behave somewhat differently from what we had seen in other parks. On our boat trip on the Chobe, we noticed very few hippos wandered over to the Namibian banks of the river. Smart guys.

There was only once we were in danger - and not at Chobe. They say the hippo is actually the most dangerous animal n Africa. I'll have some photos later of charges and mock threats
