Peacock Ginger

Kaempferia sp

Description:

small white flower growing about 10cm (3") out of the ground, no leaves, not sure of the species

Habitat:

dry tropical forest

Notes:

I spotted 2 species of Kaempferia in Thailand. One in Nam Nao, a rainforest at 800m, the other not too far away in Phu Wiang, lower altitude forest that was very dry, many trees had dropped their leaves for the season. Phu Wiang national park is known for its famous archeological findings, including an endemic species that was a distant relative of the Tyrannosaurus Rex. For something different and a change from the usual nature oriented parks I visit, I thought I would check this park out and I'm glad I did. Not only did I get to see some cool dinosaur fossils but also got some very cool spottings from the park.
