Gurnard Lionfish

Parapterois heterura

Description:

This Parapterois heterura has several common names - Gurnard Lionfish, Blackfin Lionfish and even Blackfoot (fish don't have feets!) Lionfish or Firefish (strange name). Sometimes, the common names are 'loosely' translated from non-English speaking countries resulting in weird names. Like all Lionfishes, they have venomous spines on their pectoral fins and dorsal fins. When they feel threatened, they will opens up their pectoral fins, which also display the bright blue colours on it, as warning.

Habitat:

Mostly among sandy bottoms in the shallow waters. When they are resting with their pectoral fins folded, they can be very well camouflaged among the sandy bottom.
