Messor ponticus
This is a black harvester ant queen. This is a spotting mostly to show anyone who wants to know how to identify queen ants. In this paragraph, I hope I can help you find the differences between workers and queen ants. To begin with, queen ants were not always queens. When an ant colony reaches a specific size, the queen of the colony starts to produce reproductives, a type of ants which are called alates, which have wings. Swarms of both male and female alates fly away from their home to find mates, especially after thunderstorms. When a male and a female alate have mated together, the male flies away and dies soon after, while the female chews off her wings and officially becomes a queen that starts to found her own colony. Now, let's get to the point of identifying a queen ant. 1.Queen ants are larger than the workers, as you can see in picture 2. 2.They usually have a larger gaster (abdomen) and thorax than the workers. 3. You can be sure if your ant is a queen if you see the scars left from after chewing off her wings, on her thorax. If you look closely, you may see them. I hope that information helped.
