unidentified crane fly

Description:

Slender, mottled, beige-brown winged insect about one inch long, less appendages.

Habitat:

Pacific Northwest mountainous forest ecosystem.

Notes:

Spotted walking on a paved footpath outside Johnston Ridge Observatory aboard Mount St. Helens National Volcanic monument. Although winged, it seemed reluctant or unable to fly, and tried to hitch a ride on my boot before I gave it the brush-off.

I see these flies often around my house in Tallahassee, Fl. And have posted spottings on Noah. I'm at my son's house in the Colorado Rockies right now and his yard is thick with them.
