White River Crawfish

Procambarus Zonagulus

Description:

If you haven't realized crayfish is what we Louisianas call or pronounce "crawfish and or crawdads." Baby lobsters or cousins to a lobster from what people believe to be. These species can range up to 5 inches. There life spans normally does not last longer than 2 years. Simply because predators like human beings or animals like raccoons feast off them. In order for these crawfish to protect themselves they dig burrows. These crayfish usually are found in freshwater lakes, ponds, or swamps. People hardly ever notice but there are two distinctive types of crawfish. Red swamp and white river crawfish. One difference aside from the color difference between the two is that the red swamp crayfish has a blue blood vessel under their tail while the white river does not. The white river crayfish is normally found in the Atlantic coast. White River crayfish are found in states like Louisiana, Mississippi, etc. According to coastal.la.gov the white river crayfish is about 10% of Louisiana's harvest while the red swamp makes up the rest. Mature from April-June. Normally that's when crawfish season occurs.

Habitat:

These species can be found in freshwater lakes or ponds in the Southern Atlantic coast states. Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas.

Notes:

Breathe through their gills.
