I would guess the attachments are abnormal. It just seems too asymmetrical to be a natural part of the caterpillars body. I can tell from comparing the photos that the caterpillar is moving, though. Is it normal for caterpillars to eat dead leaves like this?

Nuwan, did you witness this caterpillar actually feeding and moving about? The garish "attachments" aside, it appears to show several indications of morbidity.
