Chinese Swallowtail Butterfly

Papilio xuthus

Description:

Butterfly with wingspan of ~ 10 cm, black and yellow striped pattern on most of wings, except for black margin and line of yellow spots on trailing edge.

Habitat:

Suburban neighborhood on an insular tropical upland plateau.

Notes:

Spotted flitting about in a quick, jerky, erratic manner in my back yard. It would alight briefly and almost immediately launch itself again on its unpredictable flight path, frustrating efforts to image it. Indeed, all attempts but one were failures. The one image that was captured was at long range, through vegetation and backlit. The uploaded image is a crop of that single success, enlarged to maximum resolution. The colors remind me of a Tiger Swallowtail, but I've not previously seen that species, or a similarly colored butterfly, in this locale.
