Wasp Spider

Argiope bruennichi

Description:

This female wasp spider was found just when a grasshopper flew in the spider's orb. Immediately the spider crawled to the grasshopper and wrapped it with her silk. Luckily we catched that on tape! Argiope spp. are known for there zigzag silken decorations in their web, called stabilimenta. Unfortunately only traces of these stabilimenta could be seen, because of the grasshopper's devastating flight.

Habitat:

The orb was built in long grass, a few inches above ground level.
