Taraxacum
The dandelion is an herbaceous perennial growing from a thick, unbracing tap root. The deeply toothed leaves are basal, meaning they don't grow on stems, but emerge from the crown of the plant at ground level. The bright yellow flowers grow on hollow stalks that may hug the ground or reach as high as 70 cm. The flower head is actually a tightly packed mass of many tiny florets, typical of the entire family of plants, the Asteracea. Each petal represents a single flower, the plants have a milky latex that oozes out if the leaves or stems are broken.
The dandelion plants grows best in areas where there is a lot of full direct sunlight and part shade. Dandelions usually grow in temperate regions of the world, in lawns, on roadsides, on disturbed banks and shores of water ways, and other areas with moist soils.
Dandelions are fascinating because you can blow the petals away when they're fully grown and it's beautiful to look at. It's also satisfying when the petalos fly away along with the wind or breeze.
