Buteo lineatus
Medium sized hawk with brown, white, and reddish feathers. Appeared to have a black (or very dark brown) and white striped tail. Appears to have markings of a red shoulder and has reddish barring on its breast.
This hawk was spotted on our school playground during the early afternoon.
It seemed to be scoping out something in a small field adjacent to the playground. It flew from the high wires to the ground then to a low fence and finally back to the high wire before taking off.
It was a cool find!
Thank you Brian! We were lucky it stayed long enough for us to get some great pictures, and observe its' behavior.
Your spotting has been nominated for the Spotting of the Week. The winner will be chosen by the Project Noah Rangers based on a combination of factors including: uniqueness of the shot, status of the organism (for example, rare or endangered), quality of the information provided in the habitat and description sections. There is a subjective element, of course; the spotting with the highest number of Ranger votes is chosen. Congratulations on being nominated!
