False Purple Shamrock, Purple Oxalis

Oxalis triangularis

Description:

Purple, triangular leaves grow from a tuber. Pale pink flowers.

Habitat:

Habitat garden.

Notes:

Leaves are edible, but in moderation. They contain a high oxalic acid content, which can aggravate arthritis, gout, and kidney stones, and can bind up the body's supply of calcium leading to a nutritional deficiency. The quantity of oxalic acid is reduced if the leaves are cooked.
