cecropia moth

Hyalophora cecropia

Description:

Green with little ladybug-like bumps in a variety of colors -- orange, yellow, blue ....

Notes:

My son was calling this a beautiful ladybug caterpillar. Our local librarian helped us to identify it and when we discovered that it's a moth that cocoons in the fall and through the winter to come out in the spring, we set it up on a tree in our front yard and walked away. Thought the pictures were lousy come spring, my husband thought that he saw the moth that came from the 'caterpillar'. It was brown in color, but b/c of how high up it was, I was unable to get a good look.
