Thaptor is definitely on the right track.
A similar record is present in the Beetles of Borneo website. It may be Catharsius or Heliocopris sp.

Actually I just found a picture of the beetle I posted in a Costa Rican publication of insects. It's called a short horned Stag Beetle, Abuela, Bueicito.
Veturius sp, 37 mm.

Yes, Heide, it is a Dung beetle: Coprini tribe.
Don't know, if this checkist is complete (2 genera, about 10 species):

but once had been on Sulawesi, and there were but two Copris present.

Your beetle probably is a female (hornless), ID in these is for experts.
