Bottlenose Dolphon

Tursiops truncatus

Description:

This one is named Mooch and Beggar. He hangs out along the intercoastal and swims up to passing boats in search of food. Even though signs are clearly posted to not feed him or his friends, tourists and irresponsible residents continue to do so. He has a ragged dorsal fin, thats how you can identify him.

Notes:

Beggar, the dolphin in the picture, was found dead in the Sarasota inter-coastal where he could regularly be found soliciting food from boaters. Because people fed him he lost his fear of humans and became vulnerable to abuse. Mote Marine did a necropsy on the body to find out what killed him.
