Harvester ant colony

http://flrec.ifas.ufl.edu/entomo/ants/Pest%20Ants%20of%20Fl/pyramid_ant.htm

Description:

Entire nest area about 14" across . Two different forms if ants out and about- the smaller faster workers , and the bigger slower guard/soldiers with the bug heads. They won't hesitate to come after a finger - one almost got me as I took the picture. (served me right- I poked at it to see "what it would do". Duh. ;).

Habitat:

My backyard . Only harvester ant colony I've found back here - the others are pyramid ants . ( no fire ants, thank God!)

Notes:

For some reason, I am particularly find of harvesters- not sure why. I love the big- headed guards! Just read that harvesters are known to attack fire ants- as are Pyramid ants. Even though they all bite ( guard harvesters pack a nasty bite!) I think I'd rather get nailed by harvesters than fire ants! I am looking forward to observing this colony. It's right where our garden is going to be, but I'll deal with that this December as we prepare the soil. Probably work around the nest- I'll put flags around the nest.
