Northern Minke Whale

Balaenoptera acutorostrata

Description:

The second smallest baleen whale in the world. Used to be hunted by humans in great numbers. Like most baleen whales, they migrate to the tropics during the winter months but don't feed while they're there. When they return to the more productive, colder waters of the north, they have lost up to a third of their body weight, and spend the summer feeding to regain their fat reserves.

Habitat:

We saw about 4 minke whales in Faxaflói Bay, Iceland.

Notes:

Saw this while on a whale-watching tour in Iceland. Unfortunately, this was the only picture I could get as my boyfriend got horrendously sea sick and I spent the majority of the trip making sure he was okay. I got to see the other whales though, just couldn't get any pictures!
