A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Alligator mississippiensis
There are only 60 Albino Alligators worldwide, all living in Zoos because in free nature they have no chance to survive. The snout is wide, flat and blunt rounded front. Its size is up to six meters, but usually they reach only about four meters. The food spectrum of the alligators is very large and includes fish, birds, turtles, snails and mammals. Juveniles feed on insects, spiders, larvae, mollusks and worms. The Mississippi alligator survives for a short time in sub-zero temperatures without digging himself. He is laying in shallow water and keeps only its snout out of the water. When the water freezes then this breathing hole is still open. His body temperature rarely falls.
North and South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Lousiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas. He lives in slow-moving rivers, swamps and lakes.
