Sanderling

Calidris alba

Description:

Sanderlings are small shorebirds. Medium length black bills and black legs. One way you can ID these from other similar shorebirds is the all white underside. Many similar species in winter plumage have some streaking or color on the neck or flanks. The partial collar only reaches the side of the neck.

Habitat:

This was spotted on a sandy ocean beach.

Notes:

Spotted mixed with Snowy Plovers. Last photo compares the Sanderling with a gull.
