Horse Hoof Fungus

Fomes fomentarius

Description:

What can I say? The name says it all. It really does look extraordinarily like a hoof protruding from the trunk of a tree! This one was white with light brown sqiggly markings. This is a fungal pathogen...it will become a decomposer when the tree dies.

Habitat:

This was spotted growing high up on a tree close to a remote place called Kolakham in the northern part of West Bengal, India . The place is about 6000 m (or a bit more) above sea level. Hilly area. We were driving to see a waterfall when one of us saw a woodpecker and I saw this fungus. We stopped to shoot...the bird flew away; the fungus didnot.

Notes:

I first saw this fungus on PN, and so instantly recognized it when I saw one myself. Saw some more on another tree the next day. Will post shortly. Wikipedia says the Ice Man had some pieces of this fungus in his pack.
