Description:

The whipsnake lives in the California coastal and foothill regions. It is long and slender, and black in color with two pale yellow stripes down the sides of his back. There are two subspecies, the chaparral whipsnake and the alameda whipsnake. It is not venomous but is likely to strike if captured.

Habitat:

The Alameda whipsnake is known to utilize a wide range of habitat types including open desert, oak woodland, pine forest, chaparral, and associated open landscapes (Ortenburger 1928, Stebbins 2003).
