Short-winged Meadow Katydid (male)

Conocephalus brevipennis

Description:

I loved the visit this grasshopper provided me! The antennae were amazing, at least 2.5 inches long, when the grasshopper itself just barely was 3/4 inch!

How funny! I had the same species on BugGuide, and I thought of this spotting, but did not update the ID right away! Thanks so much Tamar for the detailed description and ID!

One easy way to tell Grasshoppers from Crickets and Kaytidids is to look at the antennae. Grasshoppers usually have shorter and thicker antennae while Crickets and Katydids have long, thread-like antennae. Female crickets and katydids also have ovipositors and I am pretty sure that grasshoppers do not.

I didn't even think about this until someone asked me about the differences. I felt pretty silly when I hadn't been able to think of this on my own. :P

Thanks Egypt. I know, there must have been an issue with the uploading...I will fix the problem accordingly.
