Central Ratsnake (Pantherophis spiloides)

Description:

Also known as the Gray Rat Snake (formerly Elaphe obsoleta spiloides). The gray rat snake has a gray background color with brown to dark gray blotches. Belly is white with dark checkers. Variations in color (phenotype) are noticeable in gray rat snakes with individuals in south Alabama being much lighter than those found elsewhere in the state.

Habitat:

Most kinds of terrestrial habitats such as forests and farmland. Great climbers (may find in trees, rafters of buildings, etc.).

Notes:

Found in our backyard basking in leaf litter near shed.
