Bur Oak

Quercus macrocarpa

Description:

One of three common oak species in the area the bur oak is easy to identify because it grows out in the open prairie or savannas rather than the surrounding forests.

Habitat:

Oak savanna.

Notes:

The acorns of this tree are the easiest way to identify a bur oak. The caps are fuzzy looking, while most acorns from other species of oak look textured and feel woody.
