Green Woodpecker

Picus viridis

Description:

Quite a big woodpecker with a stout dagger-like bill, used to excavate wood for insect larvae and to create a nest hole. Green back, greenish buff underparts and red and black facial markings. Uses long tongue to collect ants and this is why this bird visits our garden. Flying reveals bight green-yellow rump. Loud and distinctive call

Habitat:

Open deciduous woodlands and, luckily, my garden!
