House Centipede

Scutigera coleoptrata

Description:

Almost everyone has seen these "House Centipedes" in their homes or basements. I often see them in the house. This one however, was out in the wild, happily running around in the bushes in the evening. It caught a small moth and then held still for a bit for his picture while eating. These guys are harmless and beneficial, catching all kinds of unwanted bugs in the house if left alone. They originate from the Mediterranean and are now almost world wide in distribution. They have 15 pairs of legs, the last pair longer than the length of the body. Body length of this one was 1.5 cm.

Habitat:

Found on bushes along the highway between San Cristobal de Las Casas and Tuxtla Gutierrez, Km 18.5, 1164 meters.
