Typha latifolia
The common bulrush is a plant native to North and South America, Europe, parts of Asia, and Africa, and which is associated with wetlands. It can reach up to 2.5 m high. The female spikes are blackish brown, and can reach 20 cm. It can be distinguished from other types of bulrushes/cattails by the width of its leaves (1-2 cm)
Wetlands, alt. 1300 m
The rhizomes of plants in the genus Typha are edible. Evidence of preserved starch grains on grinding stones suggests they were eaten in Europe 30,000 years ago.
