Black-crowned night heron

Nycticorax nycticorax hoactli

Description:

Mottled gray-brown, black-billed bird, ~ 15 inches long.

Habitat:

Insular tropical coastal lowland.

Notes:

Spotted at a koi pond on the grounds of the Aulani Resort. The credit for this spotting goes to my sharp-eyed granddaughters who, in near total darkness, observed the heron crouched on a rock, by all appearances stalking something in the pond. I merely shined some light on the subject.
