Red Postman Butterfly

Heliconius sp

Description:

Found at Calloway Gardens, in Pine Mountain, Georgia, USA on 19 August 2014. Most of the species of butterflies I saw I could identify but there were several that I couldn't. Calloway Gardens buys butterflies from all over the world so the butterflies in their butterfly house are not all from just the US. This is one species there that I don't recognize.

Habitat:

Captive butterfly. In an enclosed butterfly garden.

Notes:

This one has a lot of wing damage, perhaps an old one. It's interesting to note that Red Postman butteflies, actually digest pollen, allowing it to live a fairly long time for butterflies, several months. This is one of the few butterflies that does this. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heliconius_...

If it is from a butterfly garden you cannot separate Heliconius erato from Heliconius melpomene from only a dorsal shot. You need the ventral view to be sure. So, if you do not have a ventral shot we should go with Heliconius sp.
