Woolly bear caterpillar (Isabella tiger moth larva)

Description:

4-cm caterpillar with thick, bristle-like setae. The larval stage overwinters... the larva actually freezes solid but survives by producing natural antifreeze in its tissues. Pupates in the spring.

Habitat:

Cornfield in southern RI.
