Pyrrhopappus carolinianus (Walter) A.P. de Candolle (Aster Family)

Description:

Located in woodland edges, pastures, meadows, and roadsides. Flowers are 2.5 inches wide, with toothed ray flowers and dark stamens. The "Field Guide to the Wildflowers of Georgia and Surrounding States" notes that this flower blooms March through June, but this specimen was seen in mid-July in central Georgia.

Habitat:

Georgia Piedmont / Indian Springs State Park - Located near a dam in a sandy area by a creek.
