Hi Tamarac, this is a species of Meadow Katydid. This insect has long, thread-like antennae (consistent with Katydids and Crickets) instead of short, think antennae. It also is a female, she has an ovipositor (the sword-like appendage extending from the end of the abdomen). Female grasshoppers do not have these.
It looks most like a Slender Meadow Katydid to me.
