Little Blue Dragonlet ( Female )

Erythrodiplax minuscula

Description:

Dragonfly: I went outside early in the morning, and I was standing next to a spiders web. This spiders web was about six inches from my face. Two seconds later, this dragonfly got caught in this spiders web. I then removed this dragonfly, from this spiders web. This dragonfly, was one and one half inches long. This dragonfly, had a head, thorax, and an abdomen. This dragonfly, had two, large, compound eyes, and two short antennae. This dragonfly, had four transparent wings, and six, jointed legs. The two main colors, were black and orange, on its thorax and on its abdomen. It had a long, slender, segmented abdomen. ( S - 1 to S - 10 ). On the top end of each wing, there is a stigma. Phylum: Arthropoda Class: Insecta Order: Odonata Odonata, is an order of carnivorous insects, encompassing the dragonflies and the damselflies. Dragonflies, are generally larger, and perch with the wings held out to the sides. Damselflies, have slender bodies, and hold there wings over the body at rest. These insects characteristically have large rounded heads, covered mostly by well-developed compound eyes, legs that facilitate catching prey in flight, two pairs of long, transparent wings that move independently, and elongated abdomens. They have three ocelli, and short antennae. Dragonflies eyes occupy much of the insects head, touching ( or nearly touching ) each other across the face. In damselflies, there is typically a gap in between the eyes. This dragonfly is alive, and able to move and fly.

Habitat:

Immature dragonflies live in freshwater. Adult dragonflies, often stay near water, but sometimes travel away from water while hunting or on migration. They are fast fliers, so they tend to hunt in open areas, not in thick trees or other vegetation. Dragonflies thrive in freshwater environments, and they live in temperate, tropical, and terrestrial locations. Immature dragonflies, are born in bodies of freshwater, and they require nutrients derived exclusively from freshwater sources to survive. Upon maturing, however, adult dragonflies gravitate towards land, but still require adjacent bodies of freshwater for food and sustenance. Dragonflies reside primarily near bodies of freshwater ( such as small streams and ponds ), that do not contain fish. Dragonflies leave on daily excursions to hunt in fields, meadows, and other open areas, that are void of thick trees and vision-impairing vegetation.
