Emerald cockroach wasp

Ampulex compressa

Description:

This wasp is known for its unusual reproductive behavior. First it stings a cockroach preventing its flight response, but leaving it mobile. Then it grabs the cockroach's antennae and leads it to its burrow to use it as a host for its larvae.

Habitat:

Spotted at Ala Wai Park.

Notes:

I wish I could have gotten a few more photos of this unusual insect, but it was gone within a second of my spotting it. 04-15 Actually saw one dragging a cockroach by its antennae. Added pictures 3 & 4.
