Mourning Dove

Zenaida macroura

Description:

The Mourning Dove is a ground feeding bird related to our domestic pigeon. During winter, the doves gather in large flocks, which feed and roost in units. Seeds from grasses, corn, and weeds, and berries from Pokeweed are important items in its vegetarian diet. The birds are not strong enough to scratch through crusted snow for their food, thus many go south in winter.
