Caterpillar
Farm fields and woods
Looks like a black "wooley bear" caterpillar ... can have a red band on it's middle... the amount of black on a wooley bear is said to suppose a severe winter ahead! The North American Field Guide of Insects (Audubon Society) says the coloration indicates how near the caterpillar is to full growth before autumn weather stimulates it to seek a winter shelter.
