Pussy Willow (Glaucous Willow)

Salix discolor

Description:

I was a little surprised to see some of the Pussy Willows (bud of the male catkin) peeking out of their buds to enjoy the rich sunlight. Only the tops of the branches that faced the sun were open. The weather has been so cold and life continues to bloom. The Pussy Willow is about 10-20 ft. tall. Look for furry white catkins on twigs in (usually) spring; leaves narrow, with widely spaced rounded teeth, dark green above, with whitish bloom below.

Habitat:

Along swamp margins, wet meadows, riverbanks.
