According to wikipedia the ssp is M. balsamina

Don Luis, auntnace may be right about the species. in fact the long one, is good to eat but very bitter.

These vines drive me crazy. The birds love those bright red seeds and spread them all over--and it seems ALL of them sprout the following year.
