These shrubby understory trees are easy to identify by their leaves. They have 3 different leaf types: glove, mitten and entire leaf.

Obrigado António. It was one of the first trees I learned to identify. Very tasty too. You can make sassafras tea and it was one of the original flavorings for root beer.
