Skink

Plestiodon sp.

Description:

Either a five-lined, or southeastern five-lined skink

Habitat:

Crawling on the side of my neighbor's house.

Notes:

I tried to get closeups of the face, but it was too high up on the wall for macro unfortunately.

Thanks for your help!

It looks to have 4 upper labials, which would rule out broadhead, but still can't tell apart the two five-lineds without looking at the underside of the tail. It's pretty annoying!

Thanks Ashley! I was hoping to get your input on this. I tried to get a closer photo of the face but I don't think it is clear enough :(

Please do not take the ID suggestion. These skinks cannot be told apart without examination of the upper lip scales and the scales under the tail. Without knowing what those look like, you have to leave it at Plestiodon sp. Either broadhead, five-lined, or southeastern five-lined.

I'm not sure this can be differentiated from Plestiodon laticeps because my photos of the face are not very clear. I'm not clear on how/which scales to count, but I think the only way to tell them apart is by scales on the face or underside. Thank you for your help though.

Nice picture! I have seen several of these, but have never been quick enough to capture their photo. This looks great.
